The essence of capoeira is that it is performed with live music. We sing songs that talk about history, songs that offer inspiration to practice the art, and songs that bring joy to people.

The main musical instruments used in capoeira are the berimbau, atabaque, pandeiro, and agogô. However, you may also encounter the reco-reco on certain occasions. In this class, you will have the chance to learn to play all of them, or at least most of them.

There is a dance that goes along with capoeira, called the Maculelê. Capoeira is a dance that became a fight, and the Maculelê is a fight that became a dance. This dance, like capoeira, is performed by two people, each holding two wooden sticks. The sticks simulate the fight while also helping to match the rhythms.

This class is an opportunity for parents and kids to work together. Over the years, I’ve noticed that this type classes create a very strong bond between family members. It’s a way to make better use of your time; you don’t have to sit for an hour or more waiting for your kids’ class to finish. Instead, you can connect more with your kids, get some exercise, and learn new things like musical instruments and songs.

The influence of African rhythms on Brazilian music is quite significant. Much of this influence came through religious practices, as well as traditional and recreational events. The primary musical instrument used is the atabaque, commonly known as the conga. In the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, the atabaque has three different sizes: Le, Rumpi, and Rum, similar to the Afro-Cuban versions known as quinto, conga, and tumba. There is an enormous variety of rhythms, and in this class, you will learn about some of them. These rhythms have a profound impact on music around the world.

Some of the Brazilian couples dance are becoming more and more popular in the US, mainly Forró, Bolero, and Samba de Gafieira. So, where to dance? The ideal place to start is to dance at parties; in Brazil, it is very common for friends and couples to go out to dance not only in clubs but also at house parties. This is also a great opportunity for showcasing outfits. The picture below shows two of my students who took Samba de Gafieira classes with me just to perform in their outfits; I have many of these cases.

Welcome to our third session of classes at Brazivedas Home Studio.

I want to let you know that at the end of this month, I will be taking a summer break. I will be in Brazil for the entire months of June and July, and I will return at the beginning of August. In the meantime, I will also be organizing a two-week Brazil Tour to Rio and Salvador, Bahia. This tour is something I have done for many years, but I took a break after the pandemic. Now I am restarting it again. This tour is about not only attending classes and going to nice shows and beaches but also creating a strong connection with the people who make things happen in Brazil.

Date: July 18 to August 2

If you are considering going, please let me know as soon as possible so I can provide you with more details.

The last class at the Home Studio before the break will be on May 24.

Thank you very much for being part of this group, and happy Sunday.

Best regards,
